Spinal Decompression at
Gravenhurst Chiropractic & Acupuncture Centre

Patient in spinal decompression therapyHealthcare professionals estimate that 8 in 10 Canadians will experience back pain at some point in their life. Often back pain sufferers will resort to medication or expensive surgery just to cope with the pain. Fortunately, a revolutionary form of treatment has emerged called Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression.

Gravenhurst Chiropractic & Acupuncture Centre is proud to offer this state-of-the-art therapy that’s specifically designed to affect spinal discs and surrounding pinched nerves.

Dr. Michael Mekis and Dr. Kelly McIntosh have successfully completed extensive training and examinations in Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression, earning them the designation of Certified Decompression Practitioners.

NEW Patients

This therapy works by gently relieving pain due to compressive forces on the spine caused by conditions including disc herniations, degenerated discs and spinal stenosis, to name a few. Non-surgical Spinal Decompression utilizes a sophisticated method of gentle pulls, holds and releases which lengthens the spine and creates an environment of negative pressure within the discs. This vacuum effect on the discs and vertebrae not only takes pressure off nearby pinched nerves, but helps to re-centralize bulging or herniated discs.

The treatment experience for patients can be so relaxing that many fall asleep! Over a series of sessions patients often note powerful pain reduction and healing through improved local blood flow and nutrient absorption by the healing disc and the injured area.

After a thorough history and examination, Drs. Mekis & McIntosh will determine the cause of the problem, and select an appropriate pull pattern, force and position on the table to ensure an effective and comfortable treatment. A typical treatment session can last up to 20 minutes and is administered while the patient is fully clothed.

As pain subsides with treatments, spinal stabilization exercises becomes essential. Drs. Mekis & McIntosh will then devise a unique and individualized sequence of stretches and core rehabilitation exercises to be performed by the patient on a daily basis to ensure proper healing of the injured area. This rehabilitation is crucial to maintaining long-term spinal health.

How Much and How Long?

Fees vary according to the type of treatment required. Likewise, the amount of care needed depends on the complexity of the case and the amount of rehabilitation required. Generally, treatments are rendered 2-3x per week at the beginning of care. As healing progresses, treatment frequency decreases until such point as maximum therapeutic benefit has been reached.

Some conditions require periodic treatments to ensure long-term gain. Each situation is handled on a case-by-case basis with frequent re-assessments to ensure progress.
